The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, is about to continue dredging works on the Scarborough River channel, according to the Corps chief of navigation Ed O’Donnell.

Earlier in September, the $2.3 million contract for the removal of sand deposits from the Scarborough River was awarded to SouthWind Construction Corporation. This is not first contract of this kind for the Indiana-based company, last year SouthWind completed major dredging project in Wells.

Dredging project is scheduled to begin this winter with the competition deadline set for March 31st, prior to the return of endangered piping plover that comes to Scarborough beaches in the spring and summer.

Around 96,000 cubic yards of sand will be removed from the River and placed on Western Beach during the project, providing more habitat for piping plovers.
