The official launching ceremony of the Port of Apollo Bay’s new dredge vessel, the Apollo, was held today in the presence of Colac Otway Shire mayor Lyn Russell and Member for Polwarth Terry Mulder.

Apollo will replace 65 years old vessel Gannet that has served the Apollo Bay community well and has reached the end of its useful life.

The $2.3 million contract for design and construction of the new dredge was awarded to Birdon Pty Ltd. The funds were provided by the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure.

The dredge, essential to the everyday workings, will keep the harbor entrance free of sand deposits to ensure vessels can safely move in and out of the harbor.
