A long-awaited project to restore the beach and dune system from the end of the Seawall to Dellanera RV Park is scheduled to begin December 1, 2014, announced cityofgalveston.org.
Approximately 120,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand will be distributed in front of Dellanera RV Park and Seascape Condominiums. This project will be managed by the Texas General Land Office with financial support from the City of Galveston and the Park Board of Trustees.
The $4.8 million project includes the construction of a dune system in front of Dellanera RV Park and Seascape Condominiums, and beach nourishment seaward of the dune from Dellanera to a point near the end of the Seawall. The beachfront sustained major damage from Hurricane Ike in September 2008.
The project is being funded with FEMA dollars provided by the City and Park Board and a grant from the state’s Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act (CEPRA). The City’s financial commitment is limited to construction of the dune system.
Project planners targeted late fall/early winter for the construction phase to avoid the nesting season for endangered sea turtles, which begins in mid-March and continues through September.
Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed in early March 2015.
