The Town of North Hempstead has received additional funding from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) for aquatic sand removal efforts at various ponds and streams, announced the Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth.
The Town received $131,947.50 in Direct Administrative Charges (DAC) from FEMA, reimbursing the Town for expenditures to DMS Disaster Consultants for their work in getting the approval of funding for the dredging of Roslyn Ponds, Mill Ponds, and re-contouring of Whitney and Manhasset Valley ponds and streams. This was the first approved Sandy-related aquatic sand removal project in the entire state of New York.
“ Our ponds, streams and waterways are such an important part of the beauty of our Town and provide wonderful passive and recreational opportunities ,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “ By receiving more funding for aquatic sand removal we are able to provide a hospitable habitat for fish and wildlife as well as adding to the aesthetic appeal to our waterways.”
To date, DMS has helped acquire $3-million in funding from FEMA for aquatic sand removal projects. These projects have not been started yet but are slated to begin in 2015.
DMS is the town’s contracted vendor to help obtain funding from FEMA for disaster-related projects.
