A major £36 million coast protection project between Clacton and Holland-on-Sea was under the spotlight during a visit from the regional flood and coast committee.

Members of the committee attended the latest section of the construction site as well as the education center at Holland Haven as part of their day in the area. They were given an introduction to the 5 km scheme which is well under way and will create 23 rock groynes and recharged beaches.

Following the visit they went back to Clacton Town Hall where they continued with a meeting of the Anglian Eastern Regional Flood and Coast Committee and a workshop. One of the main topics of discussion was partnership working and fundraising for various sites, including Clacton and Holland-on-Sea.

Mick Page, Leader of Tendring District Council (TDC) , said he was delighted that Tendring was chosen to host the event.

“ It was certainly a good time for them to come and have a look at our scheme as it is progressing well and there are already a number of the fish tail groynes in place and others being worked on ,” he said. “ We are very proud of what is being achieved for our residents and visitors and it was an opportunity to give the committee an insight into what we are doing.”

Nick Turner, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Coast Protection; June Clare, TDC’s Corporate Director for Public Experience and Mike Badger, TDC’s Engineering Services Manager also attended the event held last Wednesday (Nov 12).

Mrs Clare, the Corporate Director responsible for the scheme, gave a presentation to the committee on the Clacton experience and she has been asked to follow this up with a presentation to the Local Government Association Special Interest Group on Coastal Issues in London at their December meeting.

The main contractor for the scheme is VBA Joint Venture Limited, with the programme being project managed by Mott MacDonald.
