Two research experts from Coastal Carolina University will lead a public forum, “Sizing Up The Waccamaw Neck,” from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, at the Strand Theater in downtown Georgetown.
Paul Gayes, director of CCU’s Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies, will discuss beach renourishment in Georgetown County, and Robert Salvino, associate professor and research economist for CCU’s Center for Economic and Community Development, will provide an economic outlook for the county.
Their presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. The event is free and open to the public.
Gayes, who joined the CCU faculty in 1987, has published extensively on topics ranging from relative sea level change to coastal erosion to impacts of large storms and evolution of coastal systems. He has received more than $6 million in research grants from a wide range of federal and state agencies. Gayes earned a bachelor’s degree in earth and space science from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook in 1981, a master’s degree in geosciences from Pennsylvania State University in 1983 and a Ph.D. in coastal oceanography from the Marine Sciences Research Center at SUNY Stony Brook.
Salvino joined the CCU faculty in 2007. He conducts research in the areas of economic impact and development, as well as cost/benefit analyses for public and private projects. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Marshall University in 1997, as well as a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from Georgia State University in 2004 and 2007, respectively.
