The 38 meter dredger Johanna Josephine almost sank last week after hitting a submerged pile near GDF Suez power plant in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

In the morning of November 19th 2014, just as the vessel was about to unload its cargo of stones, the Johanna Josephine hit the submerged piling and started to sink.

Due to the hull breach, the Johanna Josephine began taking in water, which caused heavy listing. The vessel partially sunk, leaving only the deck excavator and the stern visible.

But thanks to the quick response of the DGzRS (German Maritime Search and Rescue Association) and water police, the leak was sealed successfully and the Johanna Josephine was refloated. The vessel was then towed to a shipyard in Wilhelmshaven for inspection and repairs.

Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident.
