The long-awaited dredging of the Chichester Bar is about to start today. Dredging operations will take place from November 28th to Monday, December 1st 2014.

Work will be performed by the trailing suction hopper dredger Sospan Dau. The dredger will operate, day and night, during the period HW -3 to HW +1, and rainbow the dredged material onto the seafront at Hayling Island.

Because the Sospan Dau will be restricted in its ability to manoeuvre during the dredging mariners are advised to keep clear from the area.

A deep-water channel to the Chichester Harbor that runs between West Pole, Middle Pole, and East Pole Sands is interrupted by a bar joining West to Middle and East Pole Sands. This Chichester Bar varies in position and height and is periodically dredged to maintain a charted depth of 1.5 m. The width of the dredged channel across the Bar is a little less than 200 yards.

Recent bathymetric survey of the Bar and Approach Channel showed a depth of 1.0 m below chart datum.
