The Head of the Armed Forces Engineering Department and the supervisor of the New Suez Canal project, Major General Kamel Al-Wazir, said yesterday that the digging rate at the project reached 142 million cubic meters.

The project is designed to enlarge the transit capacity and to increase industrial activity in the area.

This capital project was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish in the presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on 5 August 2014.

Companies from Egypt, UAE, the US, Belgium, and the Netherlands will dredge the new waterway. Included in the project are Boskalis, Van Oord, National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC), Jan de Nul, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD) and Dredging International NV.

In addition to creating a new canal, some existing sections of the current Suez Canal will be broadened and deepened. The estimation is that in total 250 million cubic meters of sediment will be removed.

New Suez Canal dredging project, one of the largest in recent history, is estimated to be worth around $2.1 billion.

According to MENA, the supervisor said the number of workers in the project reached 22,000 after new companies joined in the project.
