The Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society (GONHS) has expressed its concern with the ongoing coastal protection works at Camp Bay.
“ These works, which have been attributed to emergency measures, should nevertheless have followed the proper procedures and should have sought advice from locally-available expertise ,” stated GONHS.
“ Although GONHS understands that the Department of the Environment has now stopped the works and will be carrying out a retrospective assessment, damage to coastal habitat may have already taken place and protected species may have been lost, as the revetment seems already to be close to completion.”
GONHS is also concerned with the composition of the rock substrate used in the revetment, some of which is clearly not limestone. In addition to this, a range of unsuitable material has been used to fill in spaces between rocks.
“ This will have a negative impact on the recolonization of marine organisms in this area, ” GONHS concluded.
