Royal HaskoningDHV has yet again received high profile acknowledgement for its Littlehaven Promenade and Seawall, South Shields UK scheme by receiving a ‘commendation’ at the prestigious Concrete Society Awards 2014 held at The Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London recently.

This follows two other winning awards from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) North East Renaissance Awards 2014 for Infrastructure, and the ICE North East Robert Stephenson Award for projects over £4m.

The scheme replaced a failing seawall with a 500m-long seawall and promenade along a new landward and more sustainable curved alignment. Colored high quality concrete finishes, including exposure of the decorative aggregate, acid etching and bespoke public art were used to transform the beach, promenade and sea defenses.

The Judges said that this project features well-designed and well-executed sea defense structures and colorful paving. The scheme replaces a failing section of the old sea wall and improves the hydraulic performance of the sea wall interface. They went on to say that it not only provides wave and storm protection but also improved the local environment and resulted in much increased visitor numbers to the Littlehaven area.

Royal HaskoningDHV’s Project Manager Nick Cooper said “ we are delighted that this project has once again been recognized not just for its functionality but its aesthetics and contribution to the local economy ”.
