The Menemsha Creek east and west jetties in Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., will be repaired under the terms of a $1.3 million contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.
Work will be accomplished by RC&D, Inc., of Pawtucket, R.I. Construction is scheduled to start on or about January 15, 2015 and take about 4-5 months to complete. The contract was awarded on December 16, 2014.
Menemsha Creek Federal navigation project is located on the northwestern end of Martha’s Vineyard, about 12 miles southwest of Falmouth, Mass.
The work involves repairing those sections of the east and west jetties that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012 and will involve mobilizing heavy construction equipment, armor stone and other project materials to Menemsha by water.
“ The repair work will involve reconstructing both the east and west jetties to pre-storm conditions, including side slopes and crest height, ” said Project Manager Craig Martin, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs/Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “ Approximately 1,950 tons of armor stone will be placed for the project.”
Specific work tasks are intended to reconstruct severely deteriorated areas of the east and west jetties to authorized dimensions. These tasks include delivery and installation of approximately 1,950 tons of 2-4 ton armor stone to repair the jetties.
Displaced armor stone will be retrieved and re-used where applicable and new stone will be set in place to fill existing gaps in the jetties. Repairs will require substantial moving and rehandling of existing stones to obtain the required interlocking placement and construction tolerances.
The east and west jetties extend into Vineyard Sound approximately 575 feet and 450 feet, respectively, and provide protection to vessels transiting into Menemsha Creek Federal navigation project.
Funding for this project is being provided by the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013. The project will be managed by the Corps and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
