The Department of Transport and the Jurien Boat Harbour Steering Committee have begun maintenance dredging of the Jurien Bay with operations likely to continue until late March, 2015.
It is expected the dredging will remove significant amounts of seagrass wrack and sand from the harbour seabed, delivering an improved harbour environment.
In preparation for the dredging program DOT worked closely with environmental authorities to identify an appropriate site for the disposal of dredge spoil. Approval was received to prepare a large onshore disposal area to accommodate the dredge spoil.
Background
Jurien Bay Boat Harbour opened in 1988 and the facility has a history of problematic seagrass wrack and sand accumulation that is considered to be contributing to water quality issues.
Previous initiatives to address these issues have included weed trawling and maintenance dredging within the harbour.
The DOT completed sand excavation works in September 2014, removing over 8000 m³ sand from inside the harbour.
