The Japan Research Institute, accompanied by the Head of the Overseas Projects Unit of the Japanese Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports – Mr. Kosuke Fujita, recently visited the four members of the North Adriatic Ports Association (NAPA).
During the meetings at the ports of Venice, Trieste, Koper and Rijeka, the delegation wanted to learn more about the position of the EU toward investments in transport facilities and in the development plans of each NAPA port.
The delegation toured the Slovenian Port of Koper learning more about the expertise and the commercial offer of North Adriatic ports as an alternative to North European ports as a gateway to markets of Eastern and Central Europe.
They were particularly interested in port and logistic development plans in Slovenia and the Port of Koper’s dredging program. So far, the access channel to the port’s Basin 1 has been dredged to 15 meters, and starting this summer the port will continue dredging works along the Container Terminal bringing its depth to 15 meters. Also, the port is preparing all documentation needed for the extension of the Container terminal quay for additional 100 meters.
At the moment, the Port of Koper is focusing most of its investments – approx €200 million in the next five years – on the growth of annual capacity from present 850.000 TEUs to 1,15 million TEUs.
