The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District has announced additions to its fiscal year 2015 program based on the recently approved Work Plan.
This additional $12 million will be used in 2015 to repair breakwaters, dredge harbors and complete various projects throughout the Great Lakes.
“ We recognize that we are responsible for spending our resources responsibly to ensure that taxpayer-provided funds maximize value to Great Lakes projects and programs. We construct, maintain and operate key infrastructure projects that contribute to the Nation’s economy, environment, safety and quality of life, now and in the future ,” said Lt. Col. Michael Sellers, district engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.
The work plan came about when Congress appropriated additional funding for ongoing work in the fiscal year 2015 Energy & Water Development Appropriations Act as contained in the 2015 Consolidated Appropriations Act. The Corps developed an allocation plan, which included $67.7 million in additional funds for the entire Great Lakes, for high priority work packages based on the criteria established by Congress.
The Detroit District’s work plan increase of $12 million includes five new dredging projects in Michigan and Wisconsin and three repair, replacement, or construction projects.
In addition, the work plan includes funding to complete a flood risk management study, and funding to fulfill the Corps’ obligation for the repair and rehabilitation of the navigation locks along the Fox River that were transferred to the State of Wisconsin.
