The Georgetown Port is going to receive $2 million from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Fiscal Year 2015 Work Plan, according to the Congressman Tom Rice.
Right after learning that the federal government will invest two million dollars in the Georgetown Port dredging project, congressman Rice released the following statement:
“ This is a great day for Georgetown County, South Carolina’s Seventh District, and the state of South Carolina ,” said Congressman Rice . “ Together, we successfully made the case for the Georgetown Port project and the federal government has recognized its merit. This two million dollar investment is a critical first step in getting the Georgetown Port dredged to 27-feet and highlights the economic impact the port will have on our community. ”
The money is available for use this year and will be used for positioning the disposal sites to sustain more dredged material. This will allow the harbor to be dredged more efficiently. Although this is not the final step, it is a step in the right direction in returning the harbor to its authorized depth.
Congressman Rice is a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and was one of 28 members of Congress appointed to the conference committee for the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2013.
On the conference committee, Congressman Rice worked to ensure that the final WRRDA bill signed into law included language that made 10 percent of the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund available for the dredging of low-tonnage, small ports like the Port of Georgetown.
