The $12.7 million program to clear the outer shipping channel and put sand on Bald Head Island’s beaches is about halfway completed.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD) began dredging operations on Wednesday January 7th, with the dredger Alaska positioned in Bald Head Shoal Reach 1 of the channel.

“ They have dredged about 700,000 cubic yards so far, ” said Chris McCall, shoreline protection manager and assistant village manager .

The contractor is expected to remove about 1.4 million cubic yards of sand from the channel and place it onto the beaches.
