In an effort to lessen the flood problems in Metro Manila, the Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is about to resume its “Estero Blitz” cleanup campaign on major waterways in the metropolis.

Engineer Emma Quiambao, MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office director of the agency , said that the cleanup operation is set to begin on Tuesday.

The operation will clean up creeks and estuaries as part of the “Estero Blitz” campaign, which is now on its fifth year involving declogging and dredging of creeks and drainages in flood-prone areas in Metro Manila.

During its initial implementation, Estero Blitz only covers esteros (creeks) in flood-prone areas in the metropolis.

According to Quiambao, the agency will deploy 400 personnel for this year’s Estero Blitz, which will be conducted in two barangays on Tuesdays and Fridays of every week. The MMDA will start the Estero Blitz at Estero de Cabulusan in Tondo, Manila on February 17 and 18.
