The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract in the amount of $209,000 to Quaternary Resources Investigations LLC, for core drilling, soil sampling and laboratory testing of soil conditions in Orange and Jefferson counties, Texas.
The contractor is required to obtain 23 core borings and 14 cone penetrometer tests to gather preliminary soils information for possible locations to support a future hurricane surge protection system as part of the Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay Study.
“ This study is looking at options to provide coastal storm surge protection to Jefferson and Orange counties ,” said Sharon Tirpak, a project manager with the USACE Galveston District . “ Additional levee and floodwall locations are being studied and the geotechnical contract will provide the study team with data and additional information on the existing soil conditions along the proposed alignment .”
According to Tirpak, the Draft Feasibility Report is scheduled to be available for public review later this year.
Work is expected to begin by the end of the month with an estimated completion date in early summer.
