The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and N.J. Department of Environmental Protection are working on a plan to save the East Point Lighthouse by building a beach in front of it.
According to Maurice River Township Committeewoman Kathy Ireland, the lighthouse is in danger of being washed away whenever a storm hits the Delaware Bayshore.
The new beach will also protect an archeological site adjacent to the lighthouse and a protected habitat for horseshoe crabs and red knots.
The lighthouse was built in 1849 at the mouth of the Maurice River and re-designed by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1980.
