The South Shields’ Littlehaven Promenade and Sea Wall project has been shortlisted for two awards at the Placemaking Awards: the Design Excellence and Regional – Northern England categories.

The Littlehaven scheme saw the build of a new realigned curved 500m-long sea wall to replace old defenses which were deteriorating.

The project also included an attractive promenade and a coastal park area. Coloured high quality concrete finishes, acid etching and bespoke public art were used to transform the beach, promenade and sea defenses. Since it officially opened in early 2014, this has all helped to contribute to the local economy and boost tourism in this area of North England.

The project team consisted of South Tyneside Council, consultants Royal HaskoningDHV, contractors Galliford Try and landscape architects Oobe.

The Placemaking Awards recognize partnerships involved in placemaking activities including planning, regeneration, property development, economic development, urban design, landscape architecture and community renewal.

Judges look for entries that had improved the physical or environmental quality of a place or the economic or social well-being of a community.
