James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk–Interlake, on behalf of Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has announced that approximately $7.5 million will be invested across the province to improve safety and working conditions for fishermen at harbors in Manitoba.
In Gimli, the local harbor will undergo reconstruction of the concrete deck on the main breakwater wharf and on the fishermen’s wharf, as well as repairs to the adjacent wall to the wharf.
“ We welcome the federal investment in both Gimli harbor and the other harbors in Manitoba, all of which contribute significantly to the economy of Manitoba. We are certainly happy to receive the support for our recreational boating and fishing industries ,” said Eric Goodman, Gimli Harbor Authority President.
The following projects will also be realized as a result of this funding:
– Balsam Bay: extension of the wave break on the wharf to provide shelter from wind and wave action;
– Beren’s River: extension of a rubble mound breakwater;
– Gimli: reconstruction;
– Dauphin River: dredging of an expanded harbor basin, construction of new timber crib wharves and installation of new floating wharves;
– Playgreen Point: construction of new rubble mound breakwater;
– Poplar River: installation of a new concrete launch ramp and timber crib offloading wharf;
– Rabbit Point: construction of a new rubble mound breakwater;
– Thicket Portage: installation of a concrete launch ramp and timber floating wharves; and
– Hnausa: installation of an electrical system.
Approximately eleven fishing harbors in Manitoba will benefit from this investment.
