County residents in 170 homes in flood-hit areas will benefit from a six-year investment in flood protection, announced Northumberland County Council.
Another 380 homes affected by coastal erosion will also see significant investment. The Council secured the DEFRA agreement, which will ensure that vulnerable areas are protected, following work over the past 15 months with the government department.
Deputy Leader, Dave Ledger, a member of the Northumbria Regional Flood and Coastal Committee , said: “ We have worked for 15 months with DEFRA on this agreement. This is a massive step forward and a weight off the minds of people living in vulnerable communities. We aim to reduce the risk from coastal erosion for 380 properties and reduce the flood risk to 170 properties, which is good news for those residents that are affected.”
Northumberland County Council’s Business Chair, Councillor Scott Dickinson, said: ”Flooding can wreck lives and destroy communities. This is good news for those affected by flooding and coastal erosion. We are doing what we can to protect our coastal towns from erosion and climate change .”
The schemes will include the development of flood alleviation schemes at Haltwhistle, Morpeth, Ovingham, Shilbotle and Chathill as well as coastal protection schemes at Seahouses, Beadnell and Craster.
