The ongoing dredging operations at the Mappila Bay fishing harbor will be accelerated by the end of this month with the arrival of a new cutter suction dredger.
This deepening scheme involves the removal of 4,80,000 cubic meters of silt from the harbor mouth and the basin during the contract period of 18 month, according to The Hindu.
The officials expect that the harbor depth will be increased before the next fishing season.
Harbor Engineering Department Executive Engineer John Varghese said that the dredger will be delivered by April 15, and its dredging operation is expected to begin by April 30.
Fishing boat operators and fishermen in the area have been demanding removal of silt from the harbor mouth, which is causing damage to fishing boats leaving and entering the harbor.
