Governor Pat McCrory visited the North Carolina Port of Morehead City yesterday to talk about the need for continual dredging at the state’s ports, announced TWC News.
Dredging at the Morehead City harbor should start within the next month. With the short-term problem solved, McCrory said it is time now to look toward the future of the NC Ports.
“ These ports are extremely important to the economies of North Carolina, and we have really got to do a better selling message to the Army Corps to emphasize that once every once in a while dredging is not the long term solution, but we got to have continual dredging to keep these ports open and vibrant, ” McCrory said.
“ Our ports contribute $14 billion to our economy each year and support thousands of jobs statewide. It is not just the larger ports that are contributing to the United States economy, but these ports, Morehead City and Wilmington are also a very viable impact of not just the economy of North Carolina, but the economy of our nation ,” he added.
One of the deepest ports on the US East Coast, the Port of Morehead City is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
The port handles both breakbulk and bulk cargo and is the second largest importer in the country for natural rubber.
