Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, visited last week Conway Lake Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Project, in Lansing, Iowa.
During the visit, they met the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials, Iowa and Wisconsin departments of natural resources, discussed the planning stage of identifying locations for potential project features.
The group was able to assess features in Phillipi Lake, Shore Slough, Zoll Lake, as well as features adjacent to Conway Lake and Middle Slough.
They discussed options for dredging, floodplain fores, and closure structures. The main project goals are to improve and maintain backwater fish habitat, maintain quality of migratory bird habitat, and improve the ecological health of floodplain hardwood forests.
The Conway Lake project is part of the Corps of Engineers’ Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program.
