The new $85 million Berth 8 facility at the Port of Townsville is now open for business.

According to Treasurer Curtis Pitt, the new facility is an important piece of infrastructure that will bring widespread economic benefits to North Queensland.

“ It’s another sign that Queensland is open for business and of the State Government’s willingness to engage with industry to drive economic growth, ” he said.

Mr Pitt said that the $85 million Berth 8 facility was jointly funded by Port of Townsville, Glencore and Incitec Pivot.

Glencore’s Port Manager Greg O’Shea thinks that the facility was a critical part of Glencore’s integrated supply chain, which provides jobs for more than 6,100 people across North Queensland.

Ports Minister Mark Bailey said that the Berth 8 upgrade and demolition of Berth 6/7 allows for access of larger ships, creating capacity for future growth.

“ It means more ships through the port, with the new berth capable of handling two and a half more times the shiploading capacity ,” he said.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Mundingburra MP Coralee O’Rourke added that the growth of the Port of Townsville was crucial for the economy and jobs in the north of the State.
