Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bob Martin will join U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials, U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02), Ocean County officials and local officials in launching a major coastal construction project on Long Beach Island today.
A news conference will be held at the beach on East 5th Street in Ship Bottom for the start of the $128 million project, which will see the construction of 12.7 miles of dunes and beaches on the popular barrier island.
The projects are being funded through $1.2 billion appropriated by Congress to rebuild and strengthen New Jersey’s coastline to better protect shore communities following Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.
Construction of a statewide coastal protection system is a key component of the Administration’s post-Sandy storm recovery and resiliency strategy.
