Coast protection work has begun which will protect and enhance the Children’s Corner area of the south beach at Lowestoft.
The work, which started yesterday, will include protection measures against high erosion pressure, restored beach access and installation of a promenade guard-rail.
This is the second part of a two-phase scheme funded by a £2.9m contribution from the Environment Agency, with a further £450,000 provided from Waveney District Council’s Coastal Management budget.
Conditions attached to the Environment Agency funding require the work to be completed as soon as possible which means work will continue throughout the summer, with final completion expected in October.
The work at Children’s Corner will compliment the first phase of coast protection work – the installation of a rock slope covering the vulnerable flint seawall – which was successfully completed in December 2014.
Phase 2 will see the creation of new rock structures on the beach to protect the seawall at Children’s Corner, a concrete beach access ramp to replace the original which collapsed in 2013, replacement of damaged coping stones, improvements to drainage channels, beach nourishment using sand taken from the healthy beach to the south and the installation of new guard-railing at the prom edge from Parade Road South to the East Point Pavilion.
Work to build rock defenses and an access ramp is expected to begin in late June, subject to receipt of all necessary approvals.
