For the first time in 10 years, dredging operations are set to be conducted in Devonport’s Mersey River, according to The Advocate.

TasPorts CEO Paul Weedon said dredging is a highly necessary practice that had taken place in the port for more than 100 years.

This dredging work is scheduled to start about May 21 and will involve removal of material from the river channel and any built-up areas up to the mouth of the Mersey, added Mr. Weedon.

About 250,000 cubic meters of material will be removed over six weeks from the mentioned areas by dredge vessel Brage R.

Dredging work is required to restore and maintain safe navigational access for vessels owned by companies including TT-Line, Searoad and Cement Australia.
