VolkerBrooks has successfully fabricated and delivered 190 tonnes of twin Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) wailings, to assist with the extension of berth 9 at the Port of Felixstowe.
To help provide structural support to the port’s newly piled quay wall, VolkerBrooks’ in house steel fabrication team prepped and butt welded 66 50mm thick end plates onto 33 sets of box sections, to form the walings.
Delivered to site six weeks ahead of the scheduled installation date, the RHS wailings were installed by the main contractor – VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster JV (VSBW).
As part of the works package, VolkerBrooks was also commissioned to supply, fabricate and deliver 60 tonnes of tie rod bearing plates, to be used as washer plates for the tie rod ends.
Port of Felixstowe
The Port of Felixstowe is Britain’s biggest and busiest container port, and one of the largest in Europe, handling more than 3.7 million units and welcoming over 3,000 ships each year.
VSBW, a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster, is the lead contractor currently extending berth 9 by 190 meters.
This new extension will provide the port even greater flexibility to berth the world’s largest container ships.
