The Tillamook County Futures Council is about to hold a public workshop on “ Envisioning Coastal Futures ”, a project geared toward helping local coastal communities develop methods of dealing with potential flooding and erosion, particularly conjunction with climate change and rising sea levels.
“ I think this may have future implications on land use planning, not only for Tillamook County, where this work is being done in conjunction with local citizens, but also in coastal areas in Oregon and beyond ,” said David Yamamoto, Futures Council chair.
Oregon State University is the project lead with participating entities and individuals, including the Neskowin Coastal Hazards Committee, Tillamook County Department of Community Development, Tillamook County Board of Commissioners, Oregon Sea Grant, Regional Solutions, several local private property owners and developers, Oregon Department of Transportation, Climate Impacts Research Consortium, local mayors and city managers and a number of community advisory committees.
The goal of the project is to develop the information and tools necessary to enable local coastal communities to envision future flooding and erosion scenarios, assess impacts and initiate adaptation strategies over the next several decades.
The workshop is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at the Officer’s Mess Hall at the Port of Tillamook Bay Industrial Park.
