A study of the causes and rates of erosion of Whiting Beach at Hickey Island Yamba has been completed with findings that erosion threatens a number of assets including Whiting Beach itself.

A number of options to manage erosion have been considered and nourishment of the beach has been recommended as the most suitable option for the foreseeable future. Crown Lands Division is proposing to nourish the beach as part of a plan to dredge the navigation channel into Yamba in 2015.

A review of the history of the erosion, the processes contributing to it and options to manage the erosion are outlined in the documents currently on exhibition. The processes study looks at the history and causes of erosion while the management options report looks at the rates of erosion and options to manage it.

The preliminary REF considers the environmental impacts of the recommended option for managing the erosion. Council is exhibiting the three documents to inform the local community of issues with erosion at Whiting and to seek any comments to enable Council to manage erosion at Whiting Beach in a sustainable manner.
