The Sunshine Coast Regional Council will start pumping sand onto two popular Coast beaches from early June, ensuring they are storm ready, healthy and enjoyable for summer.
Division 8 Councillor O’Pray said from June 9, Council would pump over 75,000 cubic meters of sand onto Maroochydore Beach.
“ The dredger has arrived and everything is on track to start pumping sand via pipeline onto the beach from June 9, ” Cr O’Pray said. “ These works will give Maroochydore Beach the best chance of recovery and prepare it for future storm impacts.”
Division 4 Councillor Chris Thompson said renourishment works would start the next day at Mooloolaba Spit.
“ This is part of a five-year program to replenish sand at Mooloolaba Spit ,” said Cr Thompson.
“Between June and August, we’ll pump around 7000 cubic meters of sand from the entrance to the Mooloolah River onto the spit at a cost of $250,000. Work will assist with erosion protection, improve beach amenity and create safe navigational access to the Mooloolaba harbor in partnership with Queensland Transport and the Port of Brisbane Authority.”
A small section of the beach will be closed where works are taking place and traffic measures will be in place throughout the work.
