A program of beach management was carried out recently along the Eastoke frontage of Hayling Island.
The shingle beach along Eastoke is the primary line of defense against erosion and flooding, however coastal processes are constantly eroding the shingle bank. Without regular intervention, the densely populated area of Eastoke would quickly become vulnerable to flooding and coastal erosion.
Most of the material used was recycled (sourced from areas of sediment build up in the area), with a total of 33,310m³ of material from the following locations: Eastoke, West Beach, the Open Beach, and the Coastguard Station. Beach nourishment supplied the remainder, approximately 1700m³ of imported material.
The project began in late April and was completed in mid-May 2015, including both beach recycling and beach nourishment.
The total cost of the project was fully funded by the Environment Agency through a Flood Defense Grant in Aid. Havant Borough Council appointed Les Searle Sales and Plant Hire Ltd to carry out the works, under supervision of the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership (ESCP).
