Alfa Laval, a supplier of of products and solutions for heat transfer, separation and fluid handling, recently delivered its T35 gasketed plate heat exchangers for the central cooling systems onboard two trailing suction hopper dredgers.

The next-generation T35s have been installed during the last dry-docking this year.

With the new T35s in service, the two dredgers will have the T35’s eight patents and other innovations at work to deliver more uptime, longer gasket lifetime and lower maintenance and repair costs. All that adds up to 100% cooling capacity and the lowest possible total cost of ownership.

With the vessels operating at full capacity, 1000 cubic meters per hour of seawater is pumped through the T35 to transfer all the waste heat of the ship systems.

Marcel de Jong, Senior Marine & Diesel Engineer at Alfa Laval Benelux, said: “Its patented flow distribution minimizes the risk on fouling and erosion, and innovative design features contribute to achieving the lowest possible operational costs.”

When dredging the seawater contains very high concentrations of abrasive silt and sand, making cooling equipment prone to erosion-corrosion and fouling.
