The City of Chesapeake, Virginia, will hold its Citizen Information Meeting on a dredging project on June 18, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake.

The purpose of this gathering is to receive public input on the City’s conceptual design for the Cooper’s Ditch Dredging Project.

The project will restore the hydraulic capacity by removing sediment build up and restoring the bottom of the ditch to reduce localized flooding.

Comments on the project will be accepted through Monday, June 29.

Background

The City of Chesapeake improved Cooper’s Ditch and portions of Poplar Branch in the late 1980’s by widening and deepening the waterways to add additional hydraulic capacity to relieve localized flooding in the area.

In 2007, as a result of increasing flooding problems in the area, the City conducted a basin-wide flood control study and identified certain improvements required to reduce flooding.

Project Details

The City desires to restore the hydraulic capacity of the areas previously dredged by removing the sediment build up and restoring the ditch’s bottom profile.

Since the original dredging was conducted over 30 years ago, environmental regulations have substantially changed.

Dredging will comply with State and Federal environmental permits.
