Florida Governor Rick Scott together with other dignitaries and JAXPORT officials today marked the start of the Mile Point dredging project.

In January 2013, Florida Governor Rick Scott announced a commitment of $38 million in state and local funding to complete the Mile Point project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a comprehensive, years-long economic, engineering and environmental study of the project. A signed Chief’s Report for the project was issued in April 2014. In June 2014, the project received congressional authorization in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act.

The design and engineering phase of this project has been completed and the construction on Mile Point is now underway.

Deepening the Jacksonville Harbor is essential to meet the needs of larger cargo ships transiting the Suez Canal today – and the expanded Panama Canal – as those vessels deliver cargo to JAXPORT terminals.

In recent years JAXPORT has invested approx $600 million in infrastructure investments, following from cranes to docks to rail and an authorized project to deepen the federal shipping channel.
