Over €1 million of state funding has been allocated for West Cork Harbors under the 2015 Fishery Harbors Capital Investment Program.
This funding is part of a total allocation of €5 million for a number of projects under the 2015 Fishery Harbors Capital Investment Program, bringing the total capital investment under this program in 2015 to €22.9 million.
According to Noel Harrington, Fine Gael TD for Cork South West , major works to take place at Dinish Wharf will double its size through a 200 meter extension to the existing pier facility. The works will include dredging, a reconfiguration and upgrade of the boat yard and replacement of the syncrolift with an improved modern mobile boat hoist.
“ Up to €20 million may be spent on this project. This, when completed, will put the new facilities for the fishing industry and the wider seafood sector on a par with the best in Europe and will also allow for a major expansion of the seafood and other marine industries in the South West ,” said Harrington.
Improvements will be made to the slipway access and turning area at Loughanebeg Pier in Castletownbere and a new access ladder will be also be installed on the pier there. Roaringwater Pier in Skibbereen is to get a new concrete deck and mooring rings on the existing pier.
Carrigillihy Slipway in Union Hall will also get a new concrete deck on the existing slipway and new mooring rings. The damaged rock armor along the beachfront there will also be replaced.
Rosscarbery Pier will get a new concrete deck on steel toe rails will also be fitted. Access ladders will be provided at Castletownshend Durrus and Ring (Clon) Piers.
Finally at Ballydonegan Pier in Allihies the repair damaged derrick, sea walls and pier access will be repaired. Mooring rings and toe rails will also be provided.
