Around 600,000m3 of sand has been dredged from Tallebudgera Creek and placed onto Burleigh Beach in a pre-summer practice spanning 20 years, announced City of Gold Coast.
That’s similar to the amount of sand moving through the entire Gold Coast system each year.
City of Gold Coast is continuing this tradition by sending another 30,000m3 of sand to Queensland’s Cleanest Beach by the end of September.
Mayor Tom Tate climbed aboard the dredge to take a first-hand look at the progress of the Tallebudgera works before it moves south to Currumbin Creek.
“ This $913,000 dredging campaign is an integral part of our efforts to maintain and replenish sand on our beaches ready for summer,” Tate said.
“Each day some 1000m3 of sand is being pumped around the Burleigh Headland and along southern Burleigh Beach from where natural processes help spread it north.
“Once finished here the dredge will move onto Currumbin Creek to renourish southern Palm Beach with some 40,000m3 of sand from the creek mouth.”
Mayor Tate said sand replenishment and seawalls were key actions of the City’s $11 million overall investment in the beaches this year.
“ At the northern end of Burleigh we are starting public seawall peel back investigations at three separate locations to determine the condition of the walls ,” he said.
“ This will be followed by another two investigations at sites in Surfers Paradise in August as part of our extensive public seawall upgrades boosting our sea defenses into the future. ”
The Tallebudgera Creek dredging is scheduled for completion by September, prior to the school holiday period. The Currumbin Creek works are scheduled to finish by December 2015.
