The coastal defense project being developed across the north of Portsea Island has won a special award at the Environment Agency’s National Project Excellence Awards.
Chosen from over 50 projects across the UK, it was voted unanimously as the winner for making the best submission to the Environment Agency’s Large Projects Review Group.
The project is worth £44m and covers the coastline from Tipner through to Milton Common. This is one of the most vulnerable flood risk areas in Portsmouth.
The Environment Agency were particularly impressed with the level of flood protection the new defenses will provide – one of the highest in the country outside of London. They also commended the way the team have incorporated the impacts of climate change over the next 100 years into the design.
Project manager, Marc Bryan, said: “ The project is fantastic news for Portsmouth, and for it to be recognized nationally is a testament to the importance of this work for our waterfront city. Construction work is already well underway, with the first £6m being invested at Anchorage Park. The new defenses here are due to be completed this autumn.”
The new defenses will help protect over 4,200 homes and 500 businesses in the city over the next 100 years. Construction has currently underway at Anchorage Park. The rest of the defenses are set to be built in stages over the next 10 years.
