The dredging of the Mozambique’s Quelimane port that will last until January 2016 is about to begin later this month.
According to the country’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, the dredging will remove around 320,000 cubic meters of sediment from the site, creating an average port depth of five meters.
By comparison, the port depth at Maputo has been increased from 9 to 14 meters, while the tidal port of Beira – which has reasonable conditions for berthing ships – has an average depth of eight meters along its access channel.
The minister stressed that because of discharges from the Pungué river, dredging at the port of Beira totals 2.5 million cubic meters per year and in the first half of the year Empresa Moçambicana de Dragagem (Emodraga) removed approx 1.25 million cubic meters of sediment.
