The annual deepening of the Altona Safe Harbor, more commonly known as the Altona boat ramp, begins today.
Hobsons Bay City Council dredges the harbor every year in order to maintain its depth and width, ensuring the safety for recreational boats that use it.
According to Cherry Lake Ward Cr Jason Price , the Council recognized the importance of annual maintenance dredging being completed before the Port Phillip Bay Snapper season.
“ While the dredging is underway, boat movements will still be possible in and out of the harbor and the works will be done as quickly as possible during weekdays. The dredging should be completed by mid October at the latest and we ask people to be patient while it’s underway ,” Cr Price said.
The silt will be pumped from the dredge direct to the nearby beach where it will be used for renourishing the beach.
Cr Price said that during the dredging the majority of the Altona dog beach will be accessible, however a small section of the beach near the boat ramp will be temporarily cordoned off to store the dredged sand.
