All the newly-created 23 beaches along Clacton seafront will be reopened to the public at the end of the week.

Work is coming to an end on the major £36 million project and the remaining six beaches will be handed over by the contractors to Tendring District Council (TDC) on Friday.

The overall length of the upgrade involves 5kms of coastline and the work is being carried out by VBA Joint Venture Limited.

The project is being financed by Tendring District Council (TDC), Essex County Council (ECC) and the Environment Agency.

Nick Turner, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Coastal Protection , said that the whole scheme has been carried out with a minimum of disruption considering its size and has proved very popular.

“ It is a credit to our contractors, the TDC team and all of our partners that we are in a position where all the new beaches will be back in use by this time ,” he said.

The new coastal defenses will protect more than 3,000 residential and commercial properties for the next 100 years and will act as a catalyst for the renaissance of the seafront.

There will be an official opening ceremony to mark the completion of the scheme later this year.
