Neumann Contractors have commenced dredge mobilization works in Currumbin Creek for 2015. The pipeline and booster pump will be set up over the next week and dredging will begin after the Queensland school holidays.
The sand removed from Currumbin creek will be used to replenish the beach on the southern end of Palm Beach. It is anticipated that 30,000 to 40,000m³ will be dredged this year.
The dredging works are an integral part of the Gold Coast City Council’s program to maintain and replenish the sand on Gold Coast beaches. The annual dredging program also helps mitigate flooding and improve the water quality in Currumbin Creek.
Sand travelling northward up the coastline can become trapped in the entrance of the creek, sometimes blocking it completely. The sand trapped in the mouth also limits the natural sand deposition on the southern end of Palm Beach, which can cause beach erosion.
For many years now Neumann Contractors have been involved in the dredging works in Currumbin and Tallebudgera Creeks and the associated beach nourishment works.
The Nu Enterprise, a 250mm Cutter Suction Dredge, a land based booster pump and up to 1.2km of pipeline will be used to complete the works.
Both Tallebudgera and Currumbin creeks are very visible and busy sites which are open to the public at all times. The works require pedestrian access points, temporary road closures whilst laying the dredge pipeline and maintaining user access while discharging the dredged material onto the beach.
