The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, has awarded a $5.7 million contract to Lecon Inc., for the construction of the north detention basin and outfall structure at Greens Bayou, a tributary to Buffalo Bayou.
The contractor is scheduled to start mid November 2015 and will be required to clear and excavate the basin as well as construct the outfall structures.
“ Once completed, this project will help reduce flooding risks and damages during heavy rain events by safely storing excess floodwater and slowly releasing it back to the bayou when the threat of flooding has passed ,” said Shakhar Misir, USACE Galveston District project manager.
Harris County Flood Control District Executive Director Mike Talbott thanked the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works for making the Greens Bayou project a priority, and confirmed the commitment of the HCFCD’s governing body, Harris County Commissioners Court, to sustain necessary local funding.
“ Hundreds of nearby residents and businesses can rest easier knowing that the Greens Bayou Federal Flood Risk Management Project will reduce their risk of flooding, ” said Talbott. “This important project is another installment in the long and productive partnership with the Corps.”
Construction is expected to be completed by October 2016.
This work is part of the Greens Bayou Flood Risk Management project. Completion of the entire federal project will take an estimated four to five years, contingent on funding by both the federal government and the Harris County Flood Control District.
