The City of North Myrtle Beach has been abuzz with activity for the last couple of days with surveying, dune repairs and dune walkover stabilization activities.
The Coastal Carolina University personnel are taking measurements to help determine sand loss from the recent storms. The resulting information will be submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the formal process the city must follow as it continues to seek emergency beach renourishment funds.
Also, the city personnel are working on the beach with equipment in areas where dune walkovers were damaged by the storms, and sections of dunes were severely breached. They will be moving sand up from the low tide beach to place under and around damaged dune walkovers, and will also use low tide beach sand to fill in some severely breached sections of dunes.
The city is required to do the work as part of its formal agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain the federal beach renourishment project within its jurisdiction.
