The federal government of Brazil has awarded a $103 million worth contract for the dredging of the Port of Paranaguá.

According to the Port Administration of Paranaguá and Antonina (APPA) announcement, the contract for the deepening of the port’s access channel was signed with DTA Engenharia and represents first federal investment in the port in the last 26 years.

“ This is the largest dredging investment in the country and demonstrates the importance of the Port of Paranaguá in the development strategy of Brazil ,” said APPA in the release.

With the dredging of the access channel to the Port of Paranaguá, known as the Galheta Channel, the depth of the channel will be increased to 16 meters. During the project, the contractor will remove around 14, 2 million cubic meters of sand from the area.

Currently, the largest vessels that can dock at the port have a capacity of 70,000 tons, which will be increased to 90,000 tons after the dredging project is complete.

The deadline for the project is 11 months.
