Austrian construction company Strabag has just completed deepening of the Klaipeda Seaport Navigation Channel from 14,5 to 15 meters.

During the works, around 260.000 cubic meters of soil was removed from the navigation channel.

According to representatives of the Klaipeda Seaport, this €4.1 million dredging project is the first step towards achieving the depth of 17 meters in the port.

The port’s CEO, Arvydas Vaitkus , commented that this marks a new qualitative leap for the port, allowing it to accommodate even bigger ships in the future. “ In order to be competitive, we must ensure a sufficient depth of water both in the port’s navigation channel and at its quays ,” said Vaitkus.

With this in mind, Klaipeda Seaport has already awarded Jan De Nul with the €1.1 million contract to deepen the outer navigation channel to 15.5 meters by next April.

The port will continue with the capital dredging and development program with over €300 million to be invested by 2020.
