Maintenance dredging at both the port of Walvis Bay and the port of Lüderitz, undertaken by Jan De Nul, is progressing according to schedule, the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) reports.

This cleanup scheme, worth around $8 million, involves the removal of the fine silts which settle in these areas over time as part of a natural process.

If periodic maintenance dredging is not conducted, the depths in the ports could become too shallow for safe navigation.

Namport’s maintenance dredging plan also includes the Port of Walvis Bay fishing harbor, but excludes the water area in between the fishing harbor jetties.

The scope of dredging operations:

The trailer suction hopper dredger De Laperouse is being used for maintenance dredging in both ports.

The last maintenance dredging was carried out in 2004.
